More than 61 thousand hectares of land in Kyrgyzstan are inhabited by locusts, the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.
According to data of the Ministry, the Department of Chemicalization and Plant Protection of the Ministry of Agriculture is working to prevent the spread of locusts.
Locusts annually represent a potential threat to damage to agriculture, economy, social life, and also put the population of the republic at risk of food supply.
Since 2017, a massive outbreak and the spread of locust pests has been observed throughout the republic ( and in all the republics of Central Asia), and chemical processing was carried out on the area of 106 thousand 979 hectares.
It should be noted that the mass outbreak and the spread of locusts will last for 4-6 years (ie, until 2021-2025), and the cycle of biological peculiarity of the outbreaks repeats every 8-12 years, the report said.
In 2018, the first hatching of locusts was registered on April 2 at the village pastures of the Nooken region of Jalal-Abad oblast.
As of May 22, 61,448 hectares of land are inhabited by locusts.
In order to prevent the spread and damage to crops, pastures and hayfields - it is necessary to carry out measures against locust pests promptly and in a timely manner.
