Member of the Parliament Omurbek Tekebayev proposed introduction of a ban on fragmentation and sale of agricultural lands within the amendments to the law of Kyrgyzstan that have been considered by the parliamentary committee on agrarian policy, water, environment and regional development in the first reading.
Over 60% of the population of Kyrgyzstan are engaged in agriculture.
The UN estimates that food security necessitates 30 ares of irrigated land per person, while the rate makes 20 ares in Kyrgyzstan.
Arable lands should be treated as a national wealth, the MP stressed. Unfortunately, these lands are used for construction of housing, and land area is accordingly reducing.
