The real number of drug users in Kyrgyzstan is 2.5 times higher than the officially registered number, MP Damira Niyazaliyeva (SDPK) said at the second meeting of the State Coordination Committee for Drug Control on November 20.
Lying on one of 3 major drug trafficking routes, Kyrgyzstan encountered serious problems with transit and consumption of drugs, she said.
“Previously, hashish addiction was registered in the country traditionally. However, during the recent years the number of registered drug users doubled and reached 10,000, 75% of them are intravenous drug users. According to estimations of experts, the real number of drug users is 2.5 times higher than the officially registered number,” MP Niyazaliyeva stated.
Drug addicts do not live until middle age, they die either of overdose, diseases or commit suicides, the lawmaker said.
“Use of drugs bring severe consequences for families of addicts and society. The access to treatment is limited due to economic problems, distrust to official medical facilities. Besides, Kyrgyzstan has few and small rehabilitation programs so far,” the MP concluded.
