Jeenbekov and Encha discussed prospects of cooperation between Jogorku Kenesh and the UN

Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh Asylbek Jeenbekov received the head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Miroslav Jenca.

Jeenbekov expressed appreciation to the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia for the efforts aimed at strengthening cooperation between the countries of the region. He also thanked the UN system for the support to Kyrgyzstan.

The Speaker outlined the ongoing reforms in the country, in particular, judicial, electoral, educational systems, by expressing appreciation for the support of the UN to the Kyrgyz side in reforming the electoral system of the country.

In this regard, he noted that preparations for the transparent and fair parliamentary elections are priority for the government of Kyrgyzstan and the basis for the future stability of the country.

M. Encha noted the importance of the legislative branch of government in promoting reforms in several areas of the country, and stressed the fruitful cooperation between the Kyrgyz Parliament and the UN agencies.

He assured the full support of the United Nations in intention of the Kyrgyz side to conduct a transparent and open elections.

The sides exchanged views on the settlement of border issues, the delimitation of the remaining portions of the state border of Kyrgyzstan and neighboring countries, as well as current threats to regional security, the situation in Afghanistan and the prospects for cooperation in this field. Therefore the Kyrgyz Speaker urged UN agencies to strengthen support to Kyrgyzstan in strengthening human and technical capacity of border, customs services, as well as the competent authorities to combat terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking.

They sides also discussed the regional water and energy cooperation and rehabilitation of uranium tailings located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.

A separate topic of conversation was the integration processes in Eurasia in the part of the planned entry of Kyrgyzstan into the Customs Union and its accession to the Common Economic Space.

UN Resident Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan A. Avanesov informed that currently the UN Office in Kyrgyzstan developed the project to strengthen the capacity of the Kyrgyz Republic in the field of sanitation, phytosanitary, veterinary and nuclear safety in the framework of entry into the Customs Union.
