UNESCO plans to inscribe several sites in Kyrgyzstan into tangible and intangible heritage lists, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova told a press conference on August 16 in Bishkek.
The Kyrgyz Epic Trilogy Manas. Semetei. Seitek was inscribed into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. In 2008, the Art of Epic Tellers and Nooruz Holiday, the joint nomination of Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Turkey, were inscribed, Irina Bokova said.
Kyrgyzstan's traditional felt carpets – Ala Kiyiz and Shirdak – were inscribed into the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2012.
The nomination of traditional knowledge of yurt making together with Kazakhstan and another nomination with Kazakhstan “Aitysh, the art of improvisation” were considered.
Kyrgyzstan ratified 2 UNESCO Conventions in the sphere of culture: Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
“Inscription of cultural and natural sites of Kyrgyzstan into UNESCO lists primarily raises prestige of the country and helps promotion of the cultural heritage at the international level. It allows to receive more grants for development and promotion of cultural heritage,” UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova stated.
