Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbai Jheenbekov presented the CASA-1000 summit participants, which is taking place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, the stages of Kyrgyzstan's preparation for the CASA-1000 project.
He said that Kyrgyzstan attaches great importance to participating in the CASA-1000 project aimed at further developing the hydropower potential of the participating countries and creating a single electricity market in Central and South Asia.
"Energy has a great impact on the livelihoods of our countries, and serves as the basis for sustainable economic development. The CASA-1000 project will create and develop a regional electricity market between Central and South Asia, and in the future, possibly in other regions. Thus, it will serve as a favorable factor for the peaceful development of not only Afghanistan, but also the sustainable development of the economies of our countries," Zheenbekov said.
He also reported that since the official launch of the CASA-1000 project, which took place a year ago in Dushanbe, the Kyrgyz side has done a lot of work.
In his speech, the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan thanked Tajikistan in the person of President Emomali Rahmon for organizing today's summit and noted the importance of this project for all its participants, and also expressed special gratitude to the partners for their comprehensive support in the practical implementation of the regional project, mutually beneficial for all parties.
The CASA-1000 project was officially launched on May 12, 2016. The goal of this project is to reduce the electricity deficit in South Asia through the export of energy resources in Central Asia and involves the construction of a high-voltage power transmission line that will link the energy systems of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
To support more fruitful cooperation, four countries formed the Intergovernmental Council, which is responsible for resolving strategic issues on the implementation of the project.
The World Bank Group, the Islamic Development Bank, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the US Department of State, the United Kingdom Department for International Cooperation (DFID), the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and a number of other donor organizations also support the CASA-1000 project.
