Kyrgyzstan pays tribute to Aksy tragedy

President Almazbek Atambayev today attended the commemoration ceremony in honor of those who died in Aksy tragedy in 2002 as part of his working trip to Jalal-Abad region.

President Atambayev laid the wreath at the memorial in honor of victims of the Aksy tragedy.

“Fourteen years ago, right on this place, then authorities fired at their citizens. Aksy people went on protest action on that day for the sake of freedom and justice. They demonstrated courage of Kyrgyz people to the whole world,” President Atambayev said in his address to the people of Kyrgyzstan.

“The way to awakening, justice and freedom started here in Aksy on March 17, 2002. Aksy protests contributed to change of consciousness of people, awakened national dignity. The foundation for renewal of society, clearance from corruption, improvement of political system and establishment of people's power was laid here in Aksy,” the President stressed.

“17 March 2002, 24 March 2005 (President Akaev was ousted), 7 April 2010 (President Bakiev was overthrown) are very important dates in difficult way of Kyrgyz people to justice and freedom. This is pride of our people. These are three mountain passes on one heroic way,” the President stated.

“Those dates should be necessarily marked at the government level. We should perpetuate memory about those dates. Kyrgyzstan would not have future without Aksy events, March (2005) and April (2010) revolutions. Their significance is high. These are the most important events in the history of Kyrgyz people,” the President underlined.

“Everything started in Aksy. We should keep our path. We should not allow anyone to fool ourselves... We should not axe future of our children and future of our country,” the President concluded.

Protest actions were held in Aksy in January 2002, shortly after the local representative in parliament, Azimbek Beknazarov, was detained on power abuse charges. On March 17, several thousand people gathered in Aksy district to protest the detention. Demonstrators threw stones at police forces. The police fired shots into the crowd, killing four people. Another person was killed the next day, another man died of injuries he received during the clashes.
