NISS chairman: Central Asia has the possibility to be the center of world trade

Bishkek, April 23 / Kabar /. Central Asia has the possibility to become the center of world trade again. Director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISS) of Kyrgyzstan Talant Sultanov told, speaking at the International Conference "Transport corridors of Eurasia: new ways of cooperation" in Astana, organized by the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies.

Central Asia has historically been the center of world trade through the Silk Road, but with the development of sea trade routes, countries with access to the sea have obtained this opportunity, he said.

Today, the region has the possibility to be back the trade center through deeper integration and cooperation within the framework of new initiatives, in particular, the concept of the Economic Belt of the Silk Road and the New Silk Road, said Sultanov.

Also, the head of the NISS said that in early May, Kyrgyzstan will sign an agreement on accession to the Eurasian Economic Union.

Unfortunately, the level of cooperation and inter-regional trade remains low. Lack of cooperation leads to missed opportunities for all countries. However, the joint coordination and cooperation will lead to positive results and open up new opportunities, he said.

The conference was attended by leaders of think tanks and leading experts from Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Turkey.

The participants discussed the important issues of cooperation between the countries of Eurasia on the development of transport corridors, they also considered the role of countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia in the Trans-Eurasian transport corridor, infrastructure projects implementing in the countries of the region, the role of the transport corridor in increasing trade between the countries and attracting foreign investment to the region and etc.

On the results of the conference, Strategic Studies Institutes of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan and Turkey signed a joint declaration on cooperation.

One practical results was that the leading Institutes for Strategic Studies decided to work more closely to strengthen the cooperation between the countries that are part of the Turkic Council.
