The number of people diagnosed with diabetes amounted to 43 thousand for January 1, 2014, but the real number is 3-4 times greater than the official one, Member of the Parliament Damira Niyazaliyeva said on December 19 during parliamentary hearings on the implementation of the law on diabetes.
"As other countries do, Kyrgyzstan experiences the number of people diagnosed with diabetes growth. According to the World Health Organization, the number of diabetics in Kyrgyzstan amounts to 164 thousand people. Out of them, 70 thousand are children. The figure is growing every year. The Constitution and laws provide everyone with a right to healthcare, but in reality, these laws are not implemented perfectly," she said.
Growth of the patients with diabetes number is associated with inadequate funding, poor medical treatment, and lack of citizens' legal literacy. "To reduce the number of patients it is necessary to prevent, detect early, and treat the disease adequately. Prevention is much cheaper than the treatment. But unfortunately, for years people do not know that are sick, because the early detection of diabetes is not implemented properly. There is lack of endocrinologists in our country, and ordinary doctors bear all responsibility," she said.
I In total, 388 million people are diagnosed with this decease. 1 person dies from it every 6 seconds and 1 million lower limb amputations occur in the world because of diabetes, Niyazaliyeva added.
